Ductless Mini Splits

Ductless Mini Splits

While it might be a great idea to add an additional room onto your house, or finish the basement, attic, or three seasons room, you’ll need to add additional ductwork and maybe even install a new HVAC system to account for the new floor space that needs to be heated or cooled. But what if we told you there was an innovative way to control the climate in the space without altering your current HVAC system? It’s called a ductless mini split and it is an air handling unit that can control a particular area or “zone” in your house.

At N.E.W. Plumbing and Heating, we’ve helped lots of Warsaw, IN area customers install these ductless mini splits in their homes for energy-efficient heating and cooling for additions and newly finished spaces. Keep reading to find out more about ductless mini splits and if they would be a good fit for your home.

What Is a Ductless Mini Split?

As the name suggests, a ductless mini-split is a system that does not require any ductwork to heat or cool your home. If you have a central heating and cooling system, the air flows through a system of ducts that snake throughout your house. You may not have ductwork in your home, and you may not like the noise or heft of a window unit. Instead, you should consider going with a ductless mini-split.

This system is a single air handler. You may have seen one in a hotel room, but modern mini splits are very non-intrusive and tasteful looking.  Ductless mini splits use only electricity to heat or cool the air in their “zone” or area. Instead of pulling air to a central outdoor unit, each room will handle its own climate control needs through an individual fan and evaporator unit. An outdoor compressor connects to the mini split through small refrigerant lines. The air is cooled on the way to the compressor and then returned to the indoor unit that circulates the air in the room.

Benefits of a Ductless Mini Split

Many people who have ductless mini splits love them because of the numerous benefits they provide.

No Need for Ductwork

Of course, one of the biggest benefits of using a ductless mini-split is that it does not require any ductwork. To add a room to your current HVAC system, you’ll need to have more air ducts installed in that room. Mini splits use a small conduit line that is no bigger than 2 inches in diameter.

Zero Energy Losses

There is a significant amount of leakage that comes from the ductwork. If you want to avoid this leakage, then you should go with a ductless mini-split. If you have leaks coming from your ductwork, this is not only bad for the environment but also bad for your energy expenses.

Provide Both Heating and Cooling

With a ductless mini-split, you will have one system that can both heat and cool your home. This could save space and money. This is a great idea for a newly finished space that you hope to enjoy most of the year without worrying about it being uncomfortable.

Improved Indoor Air Quality

A ductless mini-split system can also improve your indoor air quality. This is particularly helpful for people who suffer from chronic respiratory conditions, such as allergies and asthma. Ductless mini splits only circulate the air in its immediate vicinity, so the germs from another room won’t spread to the room with the ductless mini split.

Quiet Operation

You do not want your system to be too noisy, as it can be distracting. One of the major benefits of a ductless mini splits is that they are incredibly quiet. You do not have to worry about it waking you up at night, and you do not have to worry about loud noises distracting you from what you are doing.

Zone Control

With a ductless mini-split system, you can also divide your heating and cooling into multiple zones. If you want to have different rooms at different temperatures, a ductless mini-split system can make that happen for you. Each air handler has its own thermostat so everyone can create the climate they want without affecting everyone in the house.

Signs You Need Mini Split Repairs

If you already have a ductless mini split, you probably are sad that it is not working properly. Luckily, N.E.W. also provides repairs for mini split systems. These are some of the common issues we’ve encountered with mini splits:

Inefficient Heating or Cooling

If you find that your heating and cooling system is not operating efficiently, this is a sign that it may require repairs. Your ductless mini-split system should not have to work that hard to heat or cool your home. Let us take a look at it to see if we can find the source of the problem.

Unresponsive To Thermostat Adjustments

If you make a change in the thermostat of your system, it should respond immediately. If you are changing the temperature on the thermostat, and you find the system is not adjusting quickly, this is a sign you need to call a professional for help.

Ice Forming on Evaporator Coils

If you see ice forming on the evaporator coils of your ductless mini-split system, you need to call a professional right away. This is not normal, and a technician should help you figure out why this is happening.

Sudden Spike in Energy Bills

Sudden spikes in energy bills are a common sign that your HVAC system needs repairs. Whether it’s your central air system, or just one mini split, a spike in energy consumption means that your system is working harder than it needs to be. We can help restore your system to the proper efficiency.
